About Diphtheria
Diphtheria is highly contagious and potentially fatal infection that can affect the nose, throat and sometimes the skin. It’s spread by coughs and sneezes, or through close contact with someone who’s infected. You can also get it by sharing items, such as cups, cutlery, clothing or bedding, with an infected person.
About Tetanus
Tetanus bacteria are commonly found in soil and the manure of animals such as horses and cows. Tetanus is a serious but rare condition caused by bacteria getting into your body through:-
- Cuts and grazes
- Tears or splits in the skin
- Burns
- Animal bites
- Body piercings, tattoos and injections
- Eye injuries
- Injecting contaminated drugs
Tetanus is found throughout the world, so you should make sure you are fully vaccinated before travelling overseas. A booster dose of a tetanus vaccine is recommended if the last dose was more than ten years ago.
About Polio
You may be at risk of exposure to polio through your work if you are a healthcare worker, or microbiology laboratory staff.
